The Palm Oil Problem

You may not have heard of palm oil, but you have probably used it—or even eaten it! Palm oil can be found in everything from soaps and lotions to the cookies and cakes you buy in grocery stores. Half of the palm oil created is used to replace air-polluting fossil fuels like the gas that runs a car. You might ask, “What does this have to do with climate change?” The answer is quite a lot.

The main problem is that palm oil comes from oil palm trees. In order to grow oil palms, traditional rainforests are destroyed to make room for them. For example, the island of Sumatra has lost 85 percent of its forest in the last fifty years just to grow oil palms.
